Oranges and almonds for a celebratory put up: Mama Ía is 10 years previous!
You might have seen I haven’t posted shortly, and there’s an excellent clarification for it. However I didn’t need to wait any longer, as a result of Mama Ía weblog is having a giant anniversary: 10 years for the reason that first put up! I nonetheless discover it laborious to imagine. And I needed to have fun with orange and almond cake, a recipe that pays homage to a few of the merchandise grown in my hometown of Onteniente.
The orange and almond cake is completely scrumptious, and like most of my recipes (I received’t get uninterested in repeating this), straightforward to make. I adore it with my espresso within the morning for breakfast, and it’s good for afternoon tea or for a snack between meals. It’s gluten-free, one other added benefit for the gluten illiberal amongst you.
To accompany this put up, a hodgepodge of a few of the issues which have occurred since my final put up: Christmas, New 12 months’s, the boys that got here and went, associates visits, chilly and snowy days in Fort Wayne, meals with associates, concert events. Life is rarely uninteresting!

When you stroll or drive by means of the fields surrounding Onteniente, you’ll discover many sorts of fruit bushes —nest to the plentiful vineyards, you’ll encounter fig, apricot, walnut, peach, plum bushes. But when there are two I’d select as very beloved by the locals, they’d be the almond and the orange bushes. I’ve talked fairly a bit on this weblog about plum fields, significantly in el Taroncheral, the home I grew up in (verify right here and right here). However a stroll by means of the pastry outlets and bakeries in Onteniente will render many desserts made with each almonds and oranges.

Handel’s Messiah, a yearly custom

Once I have a look at the ten years which have handed since my first put up on Mama Ía weblog —for churros!— I can’t assist however be amazed that it has been occurring for thus lengthy. Extra so, once I have a look at my youngsters within the pictures from the very first weblog posts to as we speak. Identical to my sons, Mama Ía has grown and altered a bit too, from once I used to prepare dinner for 5 folks to now, that I prepare dinner for simply two. Not solely I’m slowly studying how to buy a smaller family, but in addition maintain meals fascinating. As a result of, as a rule, I prepare dinner an excessive amount of and now we have leftover meals. Most weeks, then, I don’t prepare dinner all seven days of the week.
This is without doubt one of the the explanation why I haven’t posted a lot recently.

Another excuse could be a change in consuming habits. With the three grown up boys out of the home, Dave and I’ve been attempting to eat much less sugar, which suggests, much less desserts. It’s a commerce off for me, as a result of my weblog posts with dessert recipes get probably the most views! —everybody likes a good looking cake or a yummy cookie. Nevertheless, now we have made a aware resolution to eat much less of an ingredient that, whereas mandatory for the physique, as we grow old, we’d like in much less amount for a more healthy physique and longer life. However don’t fret, I’ll nonetheless make desserts and put up recipes right here! An instance is as we speak’s recipe, orange and almond cake.
And there’s but one more reason for the less posts.

All through these 10 years, you may have seen that most of the posts on the weblog included my sons of their many actions —enjoying piano, enjoying guitar or drums, enjoying soccer, and quite a lot of different actions in between. All these occasions and actions have been carried out at a excessive, intense stage, which means, they required numerous practices, video games, tournaments, concert events, performances or recitals, often involving journey. With all these actions now out of the schedule for Dave and I, we’ve needed to fill that void. Along with my common actions that you just’re conversant in —running a blog, cooking, pictures, writing, and researching for my books—, I’ve added another: I’m now a medical interpreter. One thing I’ve needed to do for some time, however couldn’t discover the time for, has now offered itself as an excellent alternative.

Being bilingual in English and Spanish, and having a background in healthcare, has allowed me begin this new enterprise, to be the connection between sufferers that don’t converse English and docs and different suppliers that don’t converse Spanish. This job is so rewarding! I facilitate the communication between these two teams of individuals, for info that’s very important to the affected person well-being and well being.
So whereas I like to prepare dinner, {photograph} and weblog —and particularly, eat what I prepare dinner!—, you could obtain a brand new weblog put up notification with much less frequency. I hope you’ll perceive it and can proceed to observe Mama Ía weblog —and above all, make its recipes!
From the underside of my coronary heart, I thanks to your assist all these years.
