Evaluation: Glenglassaugh Sandend, Portsay, and 12 Years Previous

Glenglassaugh’s core vary: We hardly knew ye! The previous Revival, Evolution, and Torfa are out. Of their place, three new core whiskies, together with the primary full-time Glenglassaugh with an age assertion: Sandend, Portsoy, and 12 Years Previous.

Formed by the influences of land and sea, the reimagined portfolio and design encapsulate the ethos of the plush, vibrant coastal spirit. The general creative route of the model has advanced, taking inspiration from the rippling sand tides at Sandend Bay, with touches of colour impressed by sea glass. As with all Glenglassaugh single malts, the brand new whisky has been gently matured within the distillery’s coastal warehouses overlooking the rolling surf of Sandend Bay.

Able to style by means of them? We did a run-through on Zoom with model ambassador Rory Glasgow, who handled us to quite a lot of meals pairings together with chocolate, pineapple, coconut, dried seaweed, and extra. Going into the nuances of pairing these whiskies with treats is an train left for the reader. In the meantime, listed below are some tasting notes.

Glenglassaugh Sandend – Named after the seashore upon which Glenglassaugh is situated, this NAS expression is aged in bourbon, oloroso sherry, and manzanilla sherry casks, the latter a rarity on the earth of Scotch. The brightest whisky on this lineup, with a creamy apple brown betty nostril, plenty of vanilla, and mandarin orange notes. Slight salinity creeps into the palate, including some parts of coastal breeze to an in any other case crisp and candy, cookie-like expression. Gently fruity however heavy with vanilla on the lasting end. Mild as could possibly be, and hard to imagine it’s 101 proof. A- / $70

Glenglassaugh Portsoy – The one peated whisky on this lineup; matured in a mixture of sherry, bourbon, and Port casks. Named for a small city close to the distillery, no age assertion. The peat begins off gentle then builds in glass, counterbalancing a tropical fruit character and a few gentle florals. The palate presents the same texture, with notes of charred greens and grilled fruits, filtered by means of the smoke of a seashore bonfire. Weighty and a bit doughy on the again finish, with a mushroom ingredient that adheres to the roof of the mouth. I by no means as soon as acquired the Port character right here, which made me unhappy. 98.2 proof. B+ / $75

Glenglassaugh 12 Years Previous – Additionally triple matured in bourbon, sherry, and purple wine casks (largely Tempranillo). Surprisingly brooding and grain-focused on the nostril, more and more tarry and wood-heavy because it builds within the glass — more and more mushroomy-umami. Brooding on the palate, with a giant hazelnut character. A few of that winey, oxidized high quality comes into focus because the end approaches, giving the whisky a considerably gummy high quality and an aggressive seaweed character. Oddly, the age-statemented whisky is well the least attention-grabbing of the bunch (and the most cost effective). This positively benefited probably the most from the meals pairings. Any of them, actually. 90 proof. B / $65
